"Durrow Laois ""Howya"" Festival"
"Durrow Laois ""Howya"" Festival - Ireland's Festival of Friendships!" Show Details
Description
"Durrow Laois ""Howya"" Festival - Ireland's Festival of Friendships is a celebration of an old Irish rural greeting, ""Howya"". This ""Howya"" greeting was accompanied by an outstretched hand - a friendly rural Irish handshake that invariably resulted in an invitation for a cup of ""tae"" at the turf fire. As part of our festival, we invite you to Durrow on International Friendship Day, Sunday August 1st to celebrate your own particular friendship and to sample the hospitality of our award-winning community. Durrow Laois ""Howya"" Festival - nine days of friendship, fun and excitement for all the family in a sparkling carnival atmosphere. Music, street theatre, fun-fair, children's entertainment, pub entertainment, sports and outdoor music events are just a sample of the fun and excitement of Ireland's friendliest festival."

The Festival includes a wide variety of what is best in our traditional arts, music, song and dance including Art Exhibition on North Kerry Landscapes, Show Details
Description
The Sean McCarthy Ballad Competition provides an incentive for individuals to write original ballads and to perform them in the final (if selected) in Teach Siamas Finuge. Sean McCarthy's Festival was initiated back in 1993 in honour of one of the greatest song-writers Kerry ever produced. Songs like 'Shanagolden', 'Red Head Mary', 'In Shame loving Shame' are just a few of the many songs that is part of the Ballad folklore of Ireland. Our Programme of events is very much based on subjects that were dear to Sean - Ballad Composition and Performing Storytelling, Dancing, Traditional Music and the Bog. Sean McCarthy, as he has often said himself, was born on the verge of the Bog. As a result you will find many references to the Bog in his songs and stories. The Sean McCarthy Weekend provides a fitting tribute to an individual who will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity.
