Fáilte Ireland announces funding for Dublinia project

20/11/2008

Fáilte Ireland, has today announced funding of over €1.25 million for Dublinia, a medieval visitor attraction located in the heart of the city. The funding is part of Fáilte Ireland’s NDP allocation designated for tourism product development.

Over the last two years, Fáilte Ireland has funded over 200 projects nationwide totalling approximately €27 million. This funding is designed to encourage both the upgrading and development of existing tourism attractions and visitor activity facilities and to bring on stream new products and experiences to meet the ever more demanding requirements of our visitors.

Shaun Quinn, Chief Executive of Fáilte Ireland stressed the need for investment in product development. He said “We are ensuring that the investment we make is in projects and areas that will bring the best results in terms of visitor interest  and those that make the most economic sense.  Such investment helps to sustain important tourism attractions and develop them to their full potential."

Dublinia is a portrayal of Dublin life and living in Viking and Medieval times, which is part of a cluster of ‘old Dublin’ visitor attractions in the heart of the Old Medieval City. Since its opening in 1993, the visitor attraction has only received minor alterations and additions however this funding will allow for a revamp in direct response to the customer demand for more excitement, entertainment and interaction.  Welcoming over 100,000 visitors every year, the medieval attraction is very much part of the Dublin Experience.

Further information on Dublinia Development Plan:

The plan capitalises on the success of the Viking World Exhibition by relocating it at the start of the visit and expands on its content, interactivity and excitement.

The Dublinia Medieval Exhibition will be relocated to the second level (thereby in correct chronological sequence) and will be upgraded to provide more space for different levels and types of interactivity, including the increased use of costumed interpreters in the Medieval Fayre - another very popular part of the exhibition.

A new Archaeology Discovery & Dig Exhibition on Viking & Medieval Life in Dublin will be located in The Great Hall.
Improvements are also planned to aid visitor flow and improve comfort and facilities throughout the building.
The entrance foyer will be enlarged to house a reconstructed Viking ship (visible from the entrance gate) that will enthral and entice visitors.

Improved décor, lighting, heating and ventilation, upgrading of rest rooms, integrated ticketing and stock control system and a classroom for educational groups have also been included in the plan.
