'Three Men in a Boat' sail into Midlands

08/10/2009
The BBC series 'Three Men in a Boat', produced by Liberty Bell Productions in London, is to be filmed in Ireland where they will travel from Dublin to Shannon by boat.

The Three Men are comedians - Dara O'Briain, Griff Rhys-Jones and Rory McGrath. They will start their journey in Dublin and travel in an old Guinness barge down the Grand Canal, crossing by land to the Royal Canal and then eventually joining up with the Shannon. The aim of their journey is to finally arrive in Limerick.

During their boating travels the Three Men will stop off to explore many local areas including spending two days in Mullingar, Co Westmeath. Items of interest here include Fore Abbey, Belvedere House and Lough Ennell.

Kevin Kidney, General Manager, Fáilte Ireland, East & Midlands said:

“This is one of the most popular shows in the UK. It offers a great opportunity to showcase the Lakelands and Inland Waterways of Ireland.  The ‘Three Men’ will experience a wide variety of things to see and do and of course the warmth of the local welcome.

Tourism in the midlands is currently being driven by the Lakelands and Inland Waterways initiative which promotes water based and land based activities in the region’s lakes and rivers, including the Shannon. The initiative involves a very productive cross border partnership between Fáilte Ireland, Waterways Ireland, Shannon Development, Fermanagh Lakelands Tourism and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

Mr Kidney continued:

“Our research indicates that Irish and overseas visitors alike are seeking tranquillity, relaxation and an unspoiled landscape when they choose to holiday in Ireland. The midland corridor, which includes some of our most beautiful countryside and waterways, offers a taste of a traditional, relatively unexplored Ireland and, by landing the Three Men in a Boat programme, we have a great opportunity to show viewers in the UK all that we have to offer”.
