The internet is the most important factor for almost half of overseas travellers who decide to visit Ireland, with seven out of ten relying on the web to plan their visit here. With these findings in mind, Fáilte Ireland this week organised an e-business conference for the North West tourism trade, entitled ‘Your Online Focus – Home and Away’ at the Clarion Hotel, in Sligo.

Local businesses in Galway are signing up to Fáilte Irelands newly launched Volvo Charter which will guarantee high quality standards and transparent pricing during the Volvo Ocean Race Festival 2012. This was announced as Fáilte Ireland officially kicked off its “Your Volvo – Your Opportunity” mobilisation programme for local tourism businesses today at the Radisson Blu Hotel. The national tourism development agency was launching its Quality, Value and Service Charter ahead of the Volvo Ocean Race finale event which starts in Galway on 30th June.

A group of top Swedish tour operators and journalists, flew into Dublin at the weekend, on Aer Lingus’s inaugural flight from Stockholm. This new route between Stockholm and Dublin will fly four times a week and is a welcome addition to the tourism offering. It is hoped the presence of these top travel agents wiill deliver significant amounts of additional business to Ireland over the coming years.

Fáilte Ireland today emphasised the great potential of golf for tourism as the Golf Forum released new research about overseas golf visitors to Ireland. This new research estimates that the typical overseas golf tourist is worth almost three times the value of the average tourist to Ireland and with approximately 155,000 overseas visitors playing golf while in Ireland, this amounts to a total estimated spend of €204 million per annum. It is estimated that expenditure of this size supports approximately 7,300 jobs in Ireland.

Eighteen trainee hotel managers this week graduated as part of the Fáilte Ireland Trainee Manager Development Programme (TMDP) at a ceremony held in the Castleknock Hotel & Country Club, Dublin. One of the students, Matti Reuter, from Germany, trained at the Clarion Hotel in Sligo, was awarded ‘Graduate of the Year 2011’ for his academic achievements and his contribution to the hotel over the past three years.

For the first time in three years, the Irish tourism industry is optimistic about its prospects for the year ahead. However, despite an increase in overseas visitors in 2011, Fáilte Ireland today cautioned against any complacency at its annual End of Year Review and stressed that consumer confidence remains fragile and improving value for money will continue to be central to regaining our share of key markets.
