The village of Bonane, located 5km from Kenmare in Kerry, has 75 houses, a church, thousands of sheep and a chocolate shop. That chocolate shop is owned by French pastry chef Benoit Lorge.

Benoit still remembers the day he drove into Kenmare and fell in love with it. He eventually moved there and was determined to stay no matter what. What that ultimately meant was finding a place and starting his chocolate business with a “bowl, pan and 2 spatulas”. He shared a space in the village post office, which he eventually took over when the post-mistress retired aged at the age of 82.

Lorge Chocolates, inspired by the landscapes of Kerry and West Cork, supply top hotels and restaurants and Benoit hosts chocolate-making workshops during the winter season. As well as selling chocolates, the shop has become a visitor experience and an unofficial tourist office, “I understood that people want to see the production and meet the artisan”. Benoit is known for his ambassadorial enthusiasm for the locality and willingness to share his tips.

Benoit has been involved with the Kenmare Food Carnival, local community, charity events, and currently with development of the Ring of Beara Cluster as part of the Wild Atlantic Way. He champions Irish food and hospitality every day by communicating his incredible passion for Irish food culture and how it has blossomed in his 16 years in Ireland.

He believes we have the best produce and great chefs, but we also have “the smile on top of it. You can engage in conversation. That is what people come for”.
