    Revised Hotel Regulations were introduced in August 2016 and, following on from this, Fáilte Ireland, in conjunction with the Irish Hotels Federation, have developed new Hotel Classification Criteria.

    It has been almost 11 years since the Hotel Regulations and Classification Criteria have been updated. The updated Regulations and Criteria reflect the changes in the industry and consumer needs since then. They also offer more flexibility to hotel operators to meet the needs of their guests and develop their individual businesses. For more information, download the following documents:

    How can I apply, and who will deal with my application?

    Our dedicated service provider is responsible for the assessment, registration and classification services to tourism businesses that are approved, or seeking to be approved, within the quality assurance framework.

    Can I renew online?

    You can renew your approval online, update business details, make payments, or add images to your listing. You can also request an assessment visit, apply for a change in classification, or submit a general query.

    To make any of these changes or requests, please sign in to our self-service portal.

    Tourist Traffic Acts

    Under Irish Law, the Tourist Traffic Acts apply to the following sectors and Fáilte Ireland has certain responsibilities for their registration and grading:

    • Caravan & camping parks

    • Guest houses

    • Holiday camps

    • Holiday hostels

    • Hotels

    • Registered self catering holiday apartments (eight or more units)

    • Registered self catering holiday cottages (eight or more units)

    • Youth hostels
