Web Summit to see Dublin in new light

Web Summit to see Dublin in new light

As Dublin becomes digital hub, international delegates and media enjoy showcase of city

With a record total of 10,000 attendees in Dublin this week for Web Summit 2013, Failte Ireland has been working hard to ensure the international delegates leave the event with the best possible image of Dublin and with a desire to return in the future.   The two-day festival of ideas will see some of the world’s leading company founders,  investors, start-ups and industry-leading firms come together at more than 60 events organised across the city.

It is estimated that 15,000 hotel bed nights will be sold in the city over the course of the Web Summit. In addition to accommodation, the hospitality sector will also receive a significant boost from the number of expected bookings for restaurants, bars, hotel boardrooms and other venues, resulting in substantial revenue for the city. Last year the event generated €24million to the local economy.

Fáilte Ireland’s Director of Marketing John Concannon is speaking at Founders, the follow up event to Web Summit and has been heavily involved in the build-up to this year's conference.  Speaking today he said –

“We are using Web Summit as a platform to promote Dublin and all that the city has to offer both as a conference destination but also as a holiday destination.  With over 80% of delegates coming from international markets, there is a huge digital footprint to tap into.”

A series of custom-made itineraries were developed for key international media from France, UK and Germany in advance of the conference while delegates snapped up the chance to enjoy morning sightjogging tours around the city taking in the sights including Trinity College, The Science Gallery and the Jennie Johnston Famine Ship.

To create a real buzz and sense of occasion in the city, Fáilte Ireland teamed up with Trinity College and the IDA to develop high impact light projections on the façade of Trinity each evening with the hashtags #LoveDublin, #WebSummit and #WhyIreland rotating.

Mr Concannon continued -

“By giving these influential delegates access to information that shows them a new side of Dublin, we hope it will help in the overall repositioning of Dublin as not only a hotspot for technology in Europe, but also a hotspot of creative, quirky, fun and inspiring experiences.”
