Fáilte Ireland Wins Silver for ‘Best Travel and Tourism App’ at Awards

Fáilte Ireland last night won silver for their Dublin Discovery Trails App in the category ‘Best Travel and Tourism App’. The Appy awards, now in their fourth year were held in Lilly Bordello’s, Dublin and are an awards programme for app development and design who reward the very best in app development and design.

The app was specifically developed by Fáilte Ireland to capture the historical significance of Dublin to both the indigenous and out of state visitor markets. The app – which is free to download for iOS and Android devices – gives the user the chance to uncover the compelling stories of Dublin’s culture, heritage and history through a series of engaging audio guides enriched with commentary, personal accounts, images and GPS-enabled maps with the route and stops clearly marked on them.  Those stories are:

    ·         Rebellion
    ·         Story of Dublin
    ·         Empire
    ·         Echoes of War

Tours also include characterization, RTÉ historic recordings and translations into Irish, French and German.

Welcoming this news, Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Digital Daragh Anglim said:

“This award is very encouraging as we strive to deliver a world-class digital experience to visitors in Ireland. In just four months there have been over 4,000 downloads of this app and we are continuing the development of this app to improve the users experience which includes developing a link between the app to the network of interpretation panels across the city by embedding iBeacon technology”.

The app, from a consumer perspective prompts users to download the content once connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot and is fully functional offline. The innovative Content Management System allows the app to be updated in real time ensuring the most current information is being displayed. Integrated analytics are able to track the number of downloads, the tours most listened to, and in what language, and the device types being used.

Fáilte Ireland recently launched the Dublin Discovery Trails - the first in a new series of themed walking trails in Dublin City. Connected to the Dubline, the tourist trail (from Kilmainham Gaol, via Trinity College, to Parnell Square) already developed by Fáilte Ireland and Dublin City Council, the new routes are intended to further open up the city and provide more ways for visitors to explore some of the city’s most interesting historic sites and attractions.

Speaking about the Dublin Discovery Trails, Fáilte Ireland’s Manager for Destination Dublin, Mark Rowlette said:

“The Dublin Discovery Trails are connected to the Dubline a major tourism orientation project that’s being developed by Failte Ireland and Dublin City Council. We officially launched the Dublin Discovery Trails in June to bring the story of Dublin to life for visitors. The objective of this new app was to showcase these new walking trails giving visitors the chance to uncover the compelling stories of Dublin’s culture, heritage and history.”

Fáilte Ireland has put their considerable weight behind the highly acclaimed project. Apps are promoted on industry and third party websites as well as being promoted via the visitor information network.
