Angling
Angling tourism brought 132,000 visitors to Ireland in 2009 and generated an estimated spend of €105 million.
Angling can be broken down into the following disciplines:
- Coarse fishing - Pike
- Game fishing – Salmon, sea trout, brown trout
- Sea fishing – Charter boat, shore, and small boat angling
Fáilte Ireland undertakes a range of activities to promote angling in Ireland. These include investment in infrastructure; support for journalists visits; angling brochures; attendance at overseas angling shows; and marketing support and training to the industry.
Anglers tell us they come to Ireland for more than just the fishing. They come for an experience that can be summed up by: ‘Travel, Stay, Fish and Play’.
While angling is the prime motivator, other elements including accommodation, food, entertainment and other activities are key components of the overall angling holiday experience.
In 2009, the development of ‘Anglers Welcome’ destinations and towns around Ireland was the primary business focus. Further information about these ongoing developments is available in our strategy document for angling.
