Fáilte Ireland welcomes the addition of 31 walking trails in 13 counties to the ‘Walks Scheme’

Fáilte Ireland welcomes the announcement this morning by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD of the addition of 31 walking trails in 13 counties to the Government’s ‘Walks Scheme’.

Fáilte Ireland research shows hiking and walking are ranked amongst the Top 10 Activities domestic tourists participated in this summer, with 57% engaging in Walking (up from 42% in 2019), and 17% in Hiking/Cross Country walking (up from 10% in 2019).

Today’s announcement means there will now be 80 trails under the Scheme which will provide a welcome boost for the national and local tourism economy, supporting rural tourism and farming enterprises in these areas. Developing the national network of walking and hiking routes will enhance Ireland’s attractiveness as a must-visit outdoor destination for tourists.

Commenting on the announcement, Fiona Monaghan, Head of Product Development - Activities at Fáilte Ireland said,

“We welcome Minister Humphrey’s announcement this morning of the addition of these trails to the Walks Scheme. Four of the walks announced under this scheme are on the Beara-Breifne Way, which stretches from Cork to Cavan. This commitment recognises the potential for this walk to be developed into a signature visitor experience with international appeal.  Having a network of world-class walking and hiking trails will encourage more people to make the most of the wonderful Irish countryside and attract international and domestic visitors to rural locations nationwide.”
