Tourist guide training

Fáilte Ireland is the National Tourism Development Authority. Our role is to support the tourism industry and work to sustain Ireland as a high quality and competitive tourism destination. We provide a range of practical business supports to help tourism businesses better manage and market their products and services.

Fáilte Ireland is no longer registered by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) and therefore no longer has a role in the direct provision of any formal education provision, including tour guiding.

However, Fáilte Ireland's vision for tourism as stated in Tourism Policy 2015-2025: People, Place and Policy for Growing Tourism recognises the importance that tour guiding plays in bringing Ireland’s culture and heritage to life for overseas visitors, through the delivery of deep personalised memorable insight into Ireland, past and present — and through creating those unforgettable experiences.

Fáilte Ireland, in consultation with QQI, ITOA, AATGI, ETBI, ETBs, IOTs and Dublinia, reviewed and redesigned the suite of tour guiding programmes.

As part of this process, and in conjunction with QQI criteria for the New Award Standards for Tour Guiding, Fáilte Ireland shared its intellectual capital with the Educational & Training Boards (ETBs), who were very interested in the area of programme delivery at national/regional accreditation level.

In May 2016 QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland), published the new standards for Tour Guiding programmes which can be viewed on the Quality and Qualifications Ireland website.
