Stunning images of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way will be viewed by a global online audience as the ‘Call of the Wild’ international social media campaign is launched today. ‘Call of the Wild’ is a joint initiative between the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland which asked local people on the Wild Atlantic Way to share images and video of their hidden gems.

In total, over 4,000 images and videos of stunning landscapes to exquisite food, known only to locals, but undiscovered by the rest of the world, were shared during the two-week campaign using #MyWildAtlanticWay. A selection of entries will now feature in a suite of videos that will be shared domestically and internationally via social media channels to highlight the beauty of the locality as a holiday destination.  Everyone who got involved had a chance to win a 2-night getaway along the Wild Atlantic Way and the overall winner of the ‘Call of the Wild’ campaign was Genevieve Callander from Galway  https://www.instagram.com/p/BlOTo3FhH2X/

The campaign, which predominantly targets international holidaymakers, will showcase the beauty of the West Coast and is expected to be viewed by over one million targeted social media users over the next four weeks.

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, commented on the ‘Call of the Wild’ initiative:

“This campaign is special as it’s the local people along the full length of Wild Atlantic Way who were asked to help create the video message by identifying the hidden gems in their community that are special and should be shared with a global audience. People are very proud of the place they live and these videos will give them a chance to showcase their region to their social media contacts, wherever they are, creating an even more personal invitation to visit the Wild Atlantic Way.”

To launch the initiative, Fáilte Ireland teamed up with eight sporting legends from along the Wild Atlantic Way, from Aidan O’Mahony in Kerry, Orla Finn in Cork, Podge Collins in Clare, Michael Murphy in Donegal, Róisin Upton in Limerick, Lee Keegan in Mayo, Alan Cawley in Sligo and David Collins in Galway. Each ‘Call of the Wild’ ambassador shared some of their favourite destinations in the region across their social media accounts, encouraging their followers to follow suit and share their own favourites.

Niall Tracey of Fáilte Ireland, said:

“Congratulations to everyone who answered the ‘Call of the Wild’ and helped to spotlight the beautiful and unique aspects of the Wild Atlantic Way. As a result of the response to the campaign, over a million online viewers will be able to have a glimpse into the unique and stunning landscapes that exist throughout the Wild Atlantic Way.”

Siobhan McManamy Tourism Ireland, added:

“Thanks to everyone for sharing their stunning hidden gems of the Wild Atlantic Way for the ‘Call of the Wild’ campaign. Tourism Ireland is delighted to promote the top entries to millions of potential visitors in important overseas markets like Great Britain, Germany and France, and to encourage them to come and experience the Wild Atlantic Way for themselves. Our social media campaigns will target our millions of active fans and followers on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram in the coming weeks, promoting off-season breaks and teeing up travel for 2019.”
