What is the EU Just Transition Fund?
To facilitate a just transition towards a low-carbon economy in the Midlands, the EU and the Government of Ireland have established a €169million Just Transition Fund for the period 2023-2026. As part of this fund, the EU has awarded Fáilte Ireland €68million for a Regenerative Tourism Scheme to invest in the sustainable development of tourism in the Midlands with the aim of creating jobs and sustaining communities.
Just Transition Regenerative Tourism Scheme
As Ireland moves towards a low-carbon economy, Fáilte Ireland will deliver the Regenerative Tourism Scheme as part of the EU Just Transition Fund. Through this scheme, we’ll develop tourism projects across the Midlands – sustaining jobs, businesses and communities.
The fund will support the transition of the Midlands to a carbon neutral destination through funding of sustainable tourism projects that are designed to have significant regenerative impacts on local communities and peatlands. The fund will be used to create more reasons for tourists to visit the Midlands and to ensure they have memorable experiences when they are here.
Fáilte Ireland intends to launch the Regenerative Tourism Scheme in July/August 2023, during the month of May a public consultation process took place. Businesses, communities and anyone with a good project idea was asked to share their ideas on how this fund could help to develop tourism in the Midlands in a sustainable way.
